For researchers

Longhand: a research brief

As our populations age, supporting people to age well — cognitively, emotionally, and socially — matters more each year. Reminiscence and life review are among the better-evidenced ways to do that: a meta-analysis of 128 controlled trials found structured reminiscence associated with improvements in ego-integrity, mood, and purpose in older adults (Pinquart & Forstmeier, 2012), and expressive writing has a long-studied association with wellbeing (Baikie & Wilhelm, 2005).

Longhand is a research-informed, handwriting-first family memoir app built on these ideas. It sends an older adult one gentle question a day about their life; they answer on paper, photograph the page, and the answers gather into a growing, searchable book their family keeps. We're an independent developer looking to partner with researchers whose work touches ageing, cognition, reminiscence, handwriting, wellbeing, or intergenerational connection.

What it is, in one minute

  • An adult child sets up a private space and invites a parent or grandparent.
  • Each day the older adult receives one prompt — a small, answerable question about their life.
  • They write the answer by hand, photograph it, and it is transcribed (kept as the original image plus typed text).
  • Answers build into a chaptered archive the family can read, search, and print.

It is available now on iOS and Android, free to start. It is a consumer wellbeing and connection product — not a medical device, and it makes no diagnostic or treatment claims.

Why it may be of research interest

Longhand sits at the intersection of several research areas, each with an existing evidence base. We present that literature as general findings, not claims about the app — a short summary, with sources, is here.

Areas of interest:

  • Reminiscence and life review
  • Handwriting and cognitive engagement (compared with typing)
  • Cognitive stimulation and everyday mental activity in later life
  • Expressive writing and wellbeing
  • Psychological resilience and meaning-making through narrative
  • Cultural connection — the transmission of heritage, language and identity, including across diaspora families
  • Intergenerational connection and loneliness

What Longhand adds is a naturalistic, daily, at-home setting in which these behaviours happen on their own — a potential context for studying them outside the lab, at the pace of real life.

Open questions we'd love help with

  • Does a daily reminiscence-and-handwriting habit relate to mood, sense of purpose, or engagement over weeks and months?
  • What predicts sustained participation in older adults, and how can a prompt-a-day design support it without pressure?
  • How does the practice affect the relationship — the quality and content of contact between the generations?
  • What are meaningful, low-burden outcome measures for a product used a few minutes a day at home?

What a collaboration could look like

  • Co-designing a small pilot or feasibility study, or advising on measures and study design.
  • Recruiting willing families into an opt-in, consented study.
  • Independent evaluation — we're genuinely interested in what's true, including null results.

Privacy by design. Stories, photographs and transcripts are shared only between family members. Our analytics never contain names, questions, stories, transcripts, photographs, emails or invite codes. Any research would be opt-in, consented, and run under appropriate ethics/IRB oversight — we'd follow your institution's requirements.
